Cow grass has wide and short leaves and can be commonly found on the side of the roads in Singapore.
They are available in 2 varieties, the 2-petalled cow grass and the 3-petalled cow grass.
Pearl grass has an appearance similar to cow grass. However, this type of grass has shorter, rounder leaves that grow sideways.
Carpet grass is typically found outdoors and is used to cover areas of the lawn with slow growth or without grass. This type of grass has coarse leaves and can grow up to 50cm if left unattended.
Turf Water Guide:
When watering grass sods, the quantity of water applied in one session should be sufficient to penetrate the soil to a minimum depth of 150mm, and at a rate which will prevent saturation of the soil. During extremely hot weather, extra care must be taken to prevent over-watering of the grass, and water applications should be spaced at longer intervals unless there is drought.
The best time to irrigate your lawn is in the early morning when dew is normally present. This will reduce water loss from heat and the wind and allow excess moisture to dry quickly. Late afternoon and evening watering will cause the lawn to remain wet for a longer period of time.
Lawns irrigated too frequently will tend to develop short, weak root systems. As a result, the lawn is susceptible to damage by pests, weeds and diseases. Irrigation is required when there is a slight change of color in the turf. A light gray-green hue in the grass blade is an indication that the grasses are beginning to wilt. One method to determine if watering is due is to simply drip a water droplet on the leaf blade. If the water droplet rolls down, it means that the grass sod requires watering.
For new seedlings and vegetations, watering should be done using a low-pressure water spray. As the roots of the seedlings and vegetation are very easily damaged, it is crucial that water is evenly distributed with the least amount of force possible.
Water lightly twice a day during establishment, then water heavily once a week. Grasses need about 25mm of water deep into the soil per week.
The cost of artificial turfing depends on the grades of the artificial turf (i.e. UV protection/ Fire-proof Certified, etc.) and installation methods used (i.e. layover/ with structure, etc.).
In general, laying artificial turf can range from as low as $1.50 per square feet to $15 per square feet.
Artificial turfs can last between 8 to 20 years. Most turfs, however, last between 10 to 15 years. The lifespan of the turf ultimately depends on the purpose of use and frequency of maintenance. Artificial turfs used in football fields will definitely experience more frequent wear and tear compared to artificial turfs in a regular backyard.
First, the real grass is removed and the base is prepared to prevent external vegetation from growing. Next, the turf is laid over and the desired plot and cut to fit. Infill is then spread over the turf to keep the artificial grass in place. Finally, using a power broom, brush the infill into the turf.
In general, we recommend watering a new turf daily for 2 to 4 weeks after it has been laid.
On the other hand, artificial turfs are synthetic and do not require water to stay alive. Watering is done to rinse away external debris or dust and it also helps the turf look fresh. A good rinse every two weeks is plenty enough to maintain the quality of your artificial turf.
